Characters: The Catalyst, Charlie, and Alan Shepard. (Son of John and Jane Shepard)
"P-please don't leave." The small child stuttered.
What was this strange pain inside him? This wasn't in his programing. Was he malfunctioning? Was he glitching? He shouldn't have been bugged with a virus or any dangerous types of malware. He was suppose to be immune to such things. His creators made sure of it.
It seemed like everything inside him was hurting. Something deep inside his programing must have caused this. Yes, that was it. His creators wouldn't have given him something as painful to experience.
The Catalyst didn't understand what was wrong with him. Having the thought of that boy, Alan leaving him seemed....what was the adjective those humans used? Frighting. Terrifying. Yes, that seemed to fit his predicament.
He never "felt" that way. His creators never gave him such a thing. Emotions were useless. A sign of weakness only races used to make sense of the universe they all lived in. Emotions an AI should never have.
The Catalyst should never have emotions. It would stray away from his programing. He had to go what his creators wanted. It was impossible for this AI to have such a useless thing.
The boy felt liquid streaming down his face. He'd seen countless races doing this during the Reaper War years back. What were they called?
Tears. No, it was more than that. But, if he had tears then he would be.....crying. That would be going against his programing. His creators wouldn't want that.
The boy felt his legs collapse in front of him. The rising tightness in his chest hurt too much. Hurt...sadness...crying...these were only for living, breathing races.
He was just an AI doing what he was told. That was it. AIs don't have emotions, they don't feel anything, they're not suppose to cry at the fact their companion might leave forever. The Catalyst shouldn't be hurt or cry at the fact he might be alone again.
For ages he was alone. No one knew except Commander Shepard that he was the product of eliminating so many races so they wouldn't have to suffer at the hands of their own creations. He had to stop them from suffering. From that pain he was feeling now.
"D-Don't leave me." The AI was shocked at how his voice sounded. He bit down his lip to keep from crying.
"Alan Shepard. You promised me. You promised you would help me!"
Let it all out, let it all out You don't have to act so brave The flowers that somebody scribbled on the wall are swaying
He heard nothing. The Catalyst knew the 12-year old boy was still in the room with him. He didn't expect a verbal response, knowing his companion was mute.
A strangled cry finally reached his lips. He couldn't hold it in. His eyes began to burn from the tears he was shedding.
Let's turn our tears and pain into stars We'll light a candle to illuminate our tomorrow Let's hold up our little hands And together we'll make stardust For an eternity that shines so brightly
"Please don't leave me alone."
There may come a day when we have to say goodbye Yet the seasons continue to change obliviously Even if I lose myself, I'll continue to walk Walk by your side That's one thing I'd like to never change
Through his pain, his tears, his sadness, the boy felt warms arms wrap around him tightly.
"Don't go. Stay with me."
Alan Shepard hugged the loneliest boy in the world tighter.
I'll always stay with you. I'm here. So, let it all out. Let it all out.
Some (or most) of ME fans will have a change of heart toward the Catalyst when they see this image and read the description.
The Catalyst should have emotions because he, as an Artificial Intelligence, can be categorized as a "sentient being" if he exhibits consciousness and self-awareness, as well as if his algorithms has evolved in the last one billion years.
From my point of view, the Catalyst (or "Charlie") in this image not only feels sad because he is alone (living alone in the Citadel for one billion years does have a significant melancholic effect on an "ageless synthetic with emotion and self-awareness") but also feels grief and remorse because his mandate to preserve life at any costs is a double-edged sword. The harvested race's genetic makeup and collective knowledge will be preserved forever in Reaper form, while at the same time countless of innocent people from numerous races (both organics and synthetics) throughout many cycles in the Milky Way galaxy have been "inadvertently" killed during the harvests.
It should be noted that Charlie knew that the good choice is not always the easy one, just like the choice he had made during his search for various alternatives to resolve the problem of organic-synthetic conflict.
